What types of grain-free dog foods are available?

What are the benefits of grain-free foods for allergies?

What ingredients to avoid?

How We Determined the Best

Determining which foods were among the best grain-free dog food for skin allergies wasn’t easy, but it’s something I do on a semi-annual basis for my little buddy. Nutrition is a science and is continually changing for both humans and animals.

In addition to going through updated research articles and any new nutritional guidelines provided by the AAFCO, I read reviews and recommendations from people like you and me who’ve had success with certain foods.

Our Recommendation for Dry Dog Foods

Kibble is easy and convenient. You can find numerous grain-free and limited ingredient options just about anywhere, including the grocery store. These are some of the most accessible foods and can be the best grain-free dog food for skin allergies.

If you’ve decided upon an elimination diet, I would recommend starting with a novel protein, one that your dog has not eaten before.

Make sure when looking for dry dog food, there are at least two meat sources in the top three ingredients, ideally with one being a meal. Meals are whole meats that have reduced water content, making them more concentrated.

If there is only one protein in the top three, be sure it is a meal. You want the majority of your dog’s protein to come from meat.

Wellness Simple Limited Ingredient Diet Lamb & Oatmeal Formula

Wellness Simple Natural Dry Limited Ingredient Dog Food, Lamb & Oatmeal, 26-Pound Bag
  • Limited Ingredient Diet: Formulated To Be Easily Digestible With Fewer Ingredients For Dogs With Food Sensitivities, Allergies Or Ingredient Intolerances
  • Single Protein: Starts With A Single Source Protein From Real, High Quality Lamb And Mixes In Easily Digestible Carbohydrates For Complete, Balanced Nutrition
  • All Natural: Contains Only Premium, All Natural Ingredients With No Gluten, Wheat, Fillers Or Artificial Additives

While not “grain-free,” Wellness Simple Limited Ingredient Diet Lamb & Oatmeal Formula still made my list for a couple of reasons.

One, it is still gluten-free, and two, for those still concerned by the taurine and DCM research, this would be my top recommendation. It lists in the top two ingredients, lamb and lamb meal.

Many dogs have done well on it. Lamb, the single protein source, is not a common allergen. Oatmeal is one of the more digestible grains, though this food also contains peas, rice, and millet.

Our Recommendations for Fresh Prepared Dog Foods

If you don’t have time to cook for your dog but still want him or her to have fresh home-cooked meals, this is the way to go. Most will need to be kept refrigerated. This food was included in this list of the best grain-free dog food for skin allergies because it uses whole foods in addition to single protein sources

Most manufacturers of fresh prepared are smaller businesses who make your food when you order. In some cases, you can customize your dog’s diet through the manufacturer when you order.

Because your food is made to order and is of whole ingredients, minimally processed, you’ll want to make sure that meat is a primary ingredient within the recipe. Most manufacturers will list it first.

Almost all of these will be limited ingredient diets.

Ollie has four recipes, lamb, chicken, turkey, and beef. They do tailor their delivery and amounts based on your dog. They also have an option if you plan to use Ollie as a supplement to a meal.

Ollie adds organ meat to most of its recipes, except the turkey recipe. While not necessary, organ meat can help to balance the nutritional profile to require less supplementation within the formula.

The beef option contains beef, beef heart, sweet potato, peas, potato, beef kidney, carrot, beef liver, spinach, chia seed, and various supplements for vitamins and minerals. has a few different options, but the duck and pear recipe is one of their more unique and complete. They use meat, organs, cartilage, and bone in their single protein line of foods.

Developed by a veterinarian, NomNomNow has four recipes, beef, turkey, chicken, and pork. They also offer probiotic and joint supplements. You can schedule delivery on a reoccurring basis in the required amounts.

The Heartland Beef Mash contains ground beef, potatoes, carrots, peas, egg, and to supplement the meal they add a nutrition mix of additional vitamins and minerals to exceed AAFCO recommendations for dog food.

The Farmers Dog

Formulated by veterinarians as well, The Farmers Dog has three recipes, beef, turkey, and pork. They recommend reoccurring food delivery and require you to answer a questionnaire to order your first time.

Only having three recipes isn’t a detriment for this selection due to the missing meal option being chicken, which I’ve mentioned is one of the more common allergens.

Their recipes also include organ meat and include additional vitamins and minerals to meet or exceed AAFCO standards.

The beef recipe contains beef, sweet potato, lentils, carrot, beef liver, water, kale, sunflower seeds, fish oil, vitamins, and minerals.

Another vet formulated diet, Pet Plate, also has four meal options, chicken, beef, turkey, and lamb. This company also has reoccurring food delivery and meets AAFCO standards.

Their beef recipe contains ground beef, sweet potatoes, potatoes, beef liver, carrots, apples, green peas, pumpkin, supplemental vitamins, and minerals.

Our Recommendations for Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Dog Foods

Both of the foods are dehydrated foods, just using different processes. Mostly made up of dehydrated meat and vegetables, the meat source should be the first ingredient listed and often only the one source animal.

The best grain-free dog food for skin allergies will usually just have one meat source. Almost all of these will be limited ingredient recipes. These foods have the most extended shelf-life and, when packaged, are the lightest. When traveling with your pets, this is your best option.

Dehydrated food will have about 90 to 95 percent of all moisture removed and often takes longer than 10 minutes to rehydrate.

Freeze-dried food has about 98 to 99 percent of moisture removed and takes about two to three minutes to rehydrate. Most feeders of these types of food mix the night before and refrigerate.

Also, they are in the process of adding additional vitamins and minerals, including taurine, to their grain-free recipes to address the taurine concerns.

Primal is an excellent option for those who would like to switch to raw feeding, but don’t want to deal with the mess or potential cross-contamination. It comes in a large nugget form you add to water to reconstitute. As such, it may take longer to rehydrate, about 15 to 20 minutes.

This food contains organ meat in addition to muscle meat to provide a balanced product. The first five ingredients consist of meat sources. They include turkey, turkey necks, whole sardines, turkey hearts, and livers.

The remaining ingredients are collard greens, squash, cranberries, blueberries, pumpkin seeds, celery, sunflower seeds, and supplements to provide vitamins and minerals. The lack of legumes makes this a solid choice for those who remain concerned about legumes blocking taurine absorption.

Fill the Bowl

Finding the best grain-free dog food for skin allergies can often be frustrating. We also want to recommend that you work closely with your vet to find the right options. Once you find a diet that works for your dog, don’t stop with the food trials.

The temptation to only feed that one diet will be strong, but you want to rotate foods and proteins for several reasons. Dogs get bored with the same food daily.

Also, reoccurring exposure to the same foods can create an autoimmune response, or in other words, another allergy. Find three to four different diets with varying proteins and other ingredients and alternate them.

Sometimes I change it up within the same day or week. I may stick with one food for a month and then switch to another. Alternate between topping with dehydrated or fresh prepared.

Another way to appease concerns about DCM and taurine is to add some grain-inclusive foods occasionally. The variety will also ensure you are hitting all nutritional requirements.

Best Dog Toys For Aggressive Chewers

a dog and a ripped teddy bear

Some of us are all too familiar with the dreaded feeling of coming home and finding our personal belongings completely destroyed by our furry best friend. Figuring out ways to combat aggressive chewing can be challenging, especially if you have to leave your dog alone in the house while you go to work or run errands. Perhaps the best dog toys for aggressive chewers can be a start?

A lot of factors go into whether or not a dog is an aggressive chewer. There are numerous potential causes of destructive chewing, as well as various steps you can take to combat it. The first thing you should do is try to figure out what may be causing your pup’s behavior.

Comparison Table

What to Do If Your Dog Is an Aggressive Chewer

By the time that you have lost a few pairs of your favorite shoes after your dog chewed them up, you are probably wondering how to keep it from happening more in the future. Are the best dog toys for aggressive chewers even going to be of any help?

Regardless of the type of chewer your dog is, chewing is natural for any puppy or dog to do. Once puppies start teething, chewing becomes a part of their development, and will occur for the rest of their lives.

Possible causes of aggressive chewing

So, what are some of the potential causes of aggressive chewing? Or chewing in general? There are more causes than you may think.

Is your dog on a calorie-restrictive diet? That could be the cause of their destructive chewing.

Your dog may begin to try and find additional nutrition sources, which could lead to them chewing and destroying objects. This type of chewing is usually toward food-related objects or at least ones that smell like food.

Separation anxiety

a dog trying to bite a bone

Yes, a dog can have separation anxiety. Do you find that your dog is only destroying items when you’re not home, or at least doing it more frequently at those times? If that is the case, then your dog could be suffering from separation anxiety.

Some other signs that your dog may have separation anxiety include:

  • Barking
  • Whining
  • Restlessness
  • Pacing
  • Urination and defecation

Puppy chewing

As we mentioned earlier, puppies will start chewing items when they begin teething. Similarly to humans, puppies go through a stage of losing their “baby” teeth and experience their “adult” teeth coming in, which is painful. Teething usually ends by the time they are six months old.

Some experts recommend giving your puppy frozen items to chew on while teething, such as unique toys that can be frozen, ice cubes, or frozen and wet washcloths.

Another option to combat teething is to give your puppy general guidance to restrict chewing, which we get into further in the next section.

Steps to take to combat aggressive chewing

There are several steps that you can take to combat your dog’s aggressive chewing habits.

Dog-proof your house

Dog-proofing your house should always be the first step that you take. Put any valuable items away that you don’t want your dog getting to. That includes putting clothes and shoes in a closed closet, books on high shelves, and dirty laundry in the hamper.

Give your dog his or her own toys

Once your dog has their own toys, they will start to learn to chew on those instead of your personal items. Be sure to pay attention to the toys that your dog is particularly fond of, so that you can continue offering those types.

If your dog gets bored quickly, then you should introduce a new toy or rotate them out every few days. That way, your dog won’t get bored of chewing on the same toys every day.

Choosing from our list of the best dog toys for aggressive chewers will bring you one step closer to combating their destructive chewing.

Supervise your dog

If you find that your dog is becoming destructive when you aren’t around, then you may want to try and supervise him or her until you’re confident that the chewing habits are under control.

That way, you’ll be there to take items out of their mouth that shouldn’t be there and replace them with a dog toy. Then, give him lots of praise while he’s playing with his toy!

When you are unable to supervise your dog, find ways to keep him from chewing on things that he shouldn’t. That may include keeping him in a confined space, such as a crate or a small room with the door closed.

However, we don’t recommend leaving your dog alone in a small space for more than six hours. If you would need to do so, we recommend finding a pet sitter or a doggie daycare.

How to Make Dog Toys Your Pup Will Sit Up and Beg For

how to make a dog toy the dog is playing with

When you're at the pet store, what do you see? A garden of can't-miss delights for your pooch? Or an array of overpriced plastic gadgets just like the ones already sitting abandoned under your sofa?

If you know how to make dog toys, you can avoid the expensive, hit-or-miss game of dog toy roulette. You can create toys for your dog's unique likes and needs. Best of all, you can save money!

What Are Dog Toys For?

Silly question, right? Everyone knows dogs like to play. But it's not just fun and games. Playtime has a number of purposes, and dog toys can do a lot more for your pooch than giving them a momentary thrill.

Playtime can help to keep your dog healthy and happy. And if you play with your dog, it can be a time for you to bond.

That's a lot of work for a toy, so it's important that your dog has the right ones.

Playtime helps dogs to do what comes naturally

Anyone who loves a dog has noticed that they have some very specific behaviors, such as:

  • Chewing
  • Digging
  • Tugging
  • Chasing

These are all things that dogs do naturally. On top of that, humans have selectively bred certain breeds to favor different behaviors. Breeders bred Jack Russell Terriers, for example, to chase small prey into their burrows and to dig in after them. As a result, Jack Russells are enthusiastic and powerful diggers.

Unfortunately, some behaviors can turn destructive or even dangerous, if not properly channeled. A dog who likes to dig may dig up the flowerbeds, for example. Or even dig out of their yard. A teething dog, or a dog who likes to chew may turn their attentions to the furniture.

Instead of punishing your dog, giving them the right toy can let them express those natural behaviors safely and non-destructively.

And if you know how to make dog toys, you can make sure your dog has the right toy for the job.

Everyone needs exercise

How much exercise does a dog need? That can vary, depending on your dog's breed or breed combination, age, and physical condition.

However, experts recommend a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day for most dogs. High-energy breeds like retrievers, shepherds, and many terriers may need as much as 90 minutes per day.

It goes without saying that a lot of dogs don't even get this much. And this can result in frustration and destructiveness.

Set aside time every day to exercise and play with your dog. It will keep them healthier and keep you happier.

Playtime helps to relieve boredom and anxiety

Let's face it: many dogs don't lead very exciting lives. This is especially true if their humans are away for long stretches of time at work or school.

Do you live in fear of coming home to find your dog has been at the trash? Do you ever wonder, as you're slipping the key into the front door lock, what that beast has ripped up while you're gone?

Most of the time it's not your dog's fault. They may be telling you they're bored or anxious. Unfortunately, few of us speak fluent dog.

If you know how to make dog toys that specifically address boredom or anxiety, you can help your pup to be happier overall...and maybe even to leave your favorite pillows alone.

Your dog wants to engage with you

Dogs are pack animals, and you are your dog's pack. They want to be with you. They want to engage with you. Playtime is one of the most fun, and most effective ways to do this.

If you know how to make dog toys, you can create unique things that no other dog has. You can use your creativity to show your dog that you want to engage with them, as well. And your creations can help you to bond with your dog better than any silly, store-bought plastic thing.

So, what are some of the kinds of toys you can make?

How to Make Dog Toys For Different Purposes

If you want your dog to have the right toy, it's important to consider the need that toy addresses. Does your dog need a boredom buster? A teething aid? Something to help with training and socialization? Whatever your dog's need, there's a toy for that.

Chewing Toys

Why do dogs chew?

Well, young dogs, like young humans, chew to ease teething pain. Chewing also helps dogs to maintain the health of their teeth and gums. Boredom, frustration and anxiety may cause a dog to chew. And some dogs just like it.

Chewing toys can help your dog to satisfy that chewing urge safely and non-destructively.

The great news is, you can make some excellent chewing toys out of things you may already have at home.

Chew and Tug Octupus

What can you do with an old t-shirt and a tennis ball? You can make something totally awesome for your best canine bud, that's what!

Why a t-shirt? Well, you can actually use any safe and durable fabric, such as fleece, old towels, sheets, or blue jean fabric. But a t-shirt has your scent on it. And that will make it extra-special for your dog.

How do you make it?

First, lay your t-shirt out flat. Next, cut three strips. Two of the strips should be five to six inches wide. The last one should be about two inches wide.

Now, take the two thick strips and lay them out like an "X." Place the tennis ball in the center of the X.

Keeping the tennis ball inside both layers of fabric, bring the "arms" of the X together and tie off the ball with the thin strip. You should now have what looks like an octopus.

Finally, cut the four thick "arms" of the octopus into three thin strips each, and braid.

Give this to your dog to chew on. You could also throw it for them. And if your dog wants a game of tug-o-war, your handy octopus is ready for that, too.

Sweet Potato Chew Toy

Sweet potatoes are good for us, and guess what? They're good for your dog, too. Not only that, but they make a fun and healthy chew toy, as well.

So how do you do it?

First, clean one large sweet potato. Next, cut it into one-half-inch (around one centimeter) thick round slices, then punch or cut a hole in the middle of each slice.

Now, lay your slices out onto a baking pan. Dehydrate them in the oven -- five hours at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius) should do it. Now string them on a rope for your dog!

Your pup will love the sweet taste. It will also give them hours of chewing pleasure.

Boredom Busters

Everyone hates to be bored -- and that includes your pooch. A food puzzle can be an excellent way to keep your pup entertained while you're away.

DIY Food Puzzle

Are you handy with a drill? It's OK if you're not. This interactive food puzzle is still pretty easy to make. Here's what you'll need:

  • A length of 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe
  • Two 1-1/4 PVC caps
  • A hand-held drill with an appropriate sized drill bit for your holes
  • Sandpaper

Recycled Squeaker Squeak Toy

Could your dog qualify for the National Squeaker Removal Squad? Are you tired of buying one expensive squeak toy after another, only to have your dog destroy them in a day, or even an hour?

Well, save those squeakers, because it's time to learn how to make a dog toy that won't fall apart.

This homemade squeaker toy is an excellent way to reuse the squeakers from old toys, as well as to use up extra fabric.

Ready? Great.

First, see that absolutely obliterated squeaker toy at the bottom of the toy basket? Grab it, and do a quick squeaker-ectomy.

Next, using thick fabric like denim, fleece or terrycloth, cut two identical flat shapes. You could make it simple, like a rectangle, or more complicated, like a bone.

Now, lay one of the shapes down. On top of that, put your stuffing. This could be pillow stuffing, or you could use extra fabric. Put the squeaker inside, and lay the other shape on top.

For a rough, rustic toy, sew the shapes together with the squeaker and fabric inside. This will leave rough edges, but your dog won't care.

If you want clean seams, sew the pieces together inside out before stuffing, leaving one end open. Then turn right side around, stuff, and sew up the final edge.

Now throw it and watch your dog go!

Best Dog Leash For Running

woman and dog jogging

If you enjoy hitting the trails often, why not bring your four-legged best friend along with you on the trails? Your dog can make an excellent running partner. To help you get off to a great start, you’ll want to consider the best dog leash for running.

What is the best dog leash for running? That depends a lot on the type of dog you have and your plans for trail running.

Things You Need to Know About Running with Your Dog

Things You Need to Know About Running with Your Dog

When trying to figure out the best dog leash for running, we’ll start by addressing some common questions.

How do I train my dog to run with me?

a dog and trainer

The first thing you’ll want to do is talk to your vet to make sure your dog is healthy enough to run with you. Not all dog breeds are made to run long distances, so you’ll also want to assess how well your dog will perform with this activity.

If your vet approves your dog to be your next running partner, you’ll need to get your pooch ready for the trails slowly. Just like a person training to run, you’ll need to introduce your dog to the trails with walks gradually. You’ll need to slowly build up your dog’s exposure to the path as you train it.

After you’ve spent some time leash training your dog, your dog should know the rules of the road. It’ll be able to go along with you on all of your trail runs.

What length of a leash do I need?

You’ll need to find a leash by focusing on your dog’s size and also figuring out how closely you want your dog to be while you are running. Many dog owners start running with shorter lashes of about 3 to 4 feet while training their dogs on a leash.

If you aren’t sure about the length that will work best for your dog, then think about getting an adjustable leash. That way, you can make adjustments easily on the go while you try to figure out the best length of the leash for your dog.

Will I need any other types of running equipment?

If you’re already a person that runs often and you’re just introducing your dog into the mix, then you probably have all of the gear that you’ll need for the trails. However, there are a lot of equipment options out there for your dog’s trail running needs, too.

One thing you’ll undoubtedly need is a collapsible bowl and water for your dog when you run. You can also consider protective vests, boots, reflectors, and other items that can keep your dog safer on the trails.

How We Reviewed

When we reviewed the best dog leash for running, we considered several things. First, we looked for products favored by customers who purchased them. We also took into consideration several features about the dog leashes we examined, like functionality and durability.

Multiple configurations

Many of the best dog leashes for running are hands-free and allow you to use them in many different ways. Hands-free leashes work as a traditional leash when you need it. However, they also give you the chance to run with your dog using a hands-free leash to make things easier for you.

Some dog leashes that are made for running can be adjusted so that you can use the leash with two dogs if you’ve got a pair. So, if you are planning on taking two dogs out on the run, you’ll have the option to do that, too.

Shock absorbers

While you won’t find them on all dog leashes, many high-quality dog leashes for running offer shock absorbers, which make the strap more comfortable to use. With a shock absorber on your strap, you and your dog will feel less tugging from each other while you run.

LED Lights

If you tend to run with your pooch often while the light is low outside, say during the early morning and late evenings, then you might want to get a leash that has some LED lights.

LED lights are a great feature on a leash for people that enjoy walking or running at night.

With some lights on your leash, it will be easy for those driving by you to see you and your pooch. While you do need to replace batteries for these lights to keep working, they’re a nice bonus when it comes to staying safe on the road.

Some dog leashes also feature reflectors, which are a nice bonus to have if yours doesn’t include LED lights. With reflectors, both you and your dog will still be visible to oncoming traffic when it’s dark outside.

Accessory pockets

Some dog leashes also include accessory pockets, which can be helpful to have whenever you go on a run. If you want to stash a few items in a secure place, then having an additional accessory pocket can come in handy.

Some people use their accessory pockets to stash items for their dogs. If you’re bringing your dog on runs, you’ll need extra space to carry a few additional things, anyway. For instance, you’ll need some water, a bowl, and doggie bags.

How Do I Stop My Dog from Marking His Territory in the House?

how do i stop my dog from marking his territory in the house

How do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house? — the age-old question among dog owners. Territory marking is your dog’s way of leaving their “calling card” and putting a mark on what’s theirs. But when this “territory” is your favorite rug or couch, it may take all the restraint you’ve got not to give the dog away.

And you don’t have to. To a dog, territory marking is normal behavior and an effective communication strategy — it’s your dog’s way of letting other dogs know who’s boss!

Lucky for you, The answer to “How do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house” has a pretty simple answer: Training. And training goes a long way towards a happy home for both you and your pooch.

Image from Pixabay

First Things First, What Is Territory Marking?

Before answering “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house,” you need to know why it’s happening. Even with the best dog training books at your disposal, if you don’t understand what territory marking is, you won’t make a lot of progress.

dog on the lawn

Image from Pixabay

Therefore, we thought it wise to explain this behavior before giving you an answer to the question, “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?”

Most people confuse territory marking with urination, but they’re different. Your dog pees in the house because they want to relieve their full bladder, and they’re not potty trained.

Marking, on the other hand, doesn’t involve full emptying of the bladder. Instead, the canine releases a small amount of urine as a way of communication.

You see, dog urine has chemicals known as pheromones that provide essential information like the dog’s gender, age, reproductive status, and health — essential olfactory reading for dogs. It’s for this reason that you’ll often see dogs smelling other canines’ pee.

Dogs begin marking at puberty, which is around six to nine months of age. This behavior is typical of, but not limited to, male dogs.

When is urine marking okay?

As we’ve already mentioned, marking is your dog’s way of communicating. Don’t be surprised to see your dog stopping and sniffing once in a while during your walks.

Each time the dog stops to sniff, he or she is reading a message left by another canine. And they leave their message by marking their territory before they go. This behavior is completely acceptable if they’re doing it outdoors. The problem comes in when they’re marking almost every spot in your house.

Territory marking triggers

Apart from age, other factors may cause your dog to start marking. One common reason is a change in their environment. If you just brought your dog home from a shelter, they may feel the need to mark their territory to create a sense of familiarity.

Your dog may also start marking when another canine visits your home. It’s the dog’s way of saying that’s his territory. A change of houses, moving or furniture, change of routine, death of a housemate, and other stressful conditions may also cause your dog to start marking.

This behavior is your dog’s way of creating a sense of normalcy. Just like you’d place a picture of your family on your desk on your first day of work to make it feel at home, your dog feels like they belong when they mark.

How Do I Stop My Dog from Marking His Territory in the House?

Now back to the question, “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?”

First, you should know that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for territory marking. We advise using a combination of these tips on how to stop dog marking for the best results.

And before you begin, it would be best to try and figure out why your furry friend is marking. Is it due to changes you’ve introduced in their routine or your house, or is it an age thing?

Understanding the cause of their behavior will make it easier to answer, “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?”

A good place to start

The first step in figuring out “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” is employing careful management. Keeping a close eye on your fur baby at all times will do wonders in preventing this unwanted behavior from recurring.

But don’t just watch them closely. Take a few measures to discourage this behavior. For instance, if your dog likes marking in one particular room, it may help to restrict access to that area.

If restricting access doesn’t fix the problem, try confining them in their crate for a while. Dogs know better than to soil where they sleep. So it may stop their bad behavior.

Some people also find it useful to place the dog’s food in the areas they like marking. Because the dog won’t pee where they eat, it may help stop their bad behavior.

Make your furry friend feel at home

Dogs feel uncomfortable in new living situations. Whether you just brought them home or you have a new house guest, your dog will feel the need to mark their territory to claim what they believe is theirs.

Therefore, if you’ve recently had similar changes in your home, it may help to make your fur baby feel comfortable in their new space. For instance, if you’ve just rescued a dog, it will help to give him or her some time to get used to their new home.

Make the dog feel at home by playing with him, feeding him, and spending time with him.

If it’s the case of unfamiliar faces in the home, give your dog some time to get used to them as well. Have your new house guest walk the dog and play with him so that they get to know each other.

The more your dog feels comfortable around the new people and changes in living conditions, the faster they’ll stop marking in the house.

Assert yourself as the pack leader

If you’re like most dog owners, your dog is your best friend, and you’ll stop at nothing to convey how much you love them. There’s nothing wrong with giving your dog the VIP treatment.

However, you still need to lay down some rules, boundaries, and limitations because canines crave structure. If you allow your dog to do whatever they want, it will cause anxiety, especially in a multiple dog household.

As a result, answering “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” becomes far more difficult. For this reason, you need to make sure your dog knows you are the pack leader, and they follow your lead. This way, you’ll have an easier time getting them to stop marking in the house.

Prepare in advance

In most cases, dogs start marking when they reach full sexual maturity. Therefore, if your dog is yet to get to this stage, it’s advisable to consider neutering. While it’s not a guaranteed fix, neutering reduces the likelihood to mark by stopping hormonal influence.

“How do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” Snip snip is one answer.

However, it’s best to combine neutering with constant supervision. When you sense your dog is about to mark, startle them with a hand clap or a slight shout to indicate that it’s terrible behavior and open the door so the dog can go outside.

Once they pee outside, give them treats to teach them that peeing outside is the way to go. You’ll need to do this a couple of times for the dog to learn and avoid making in the house.

Manage stress properly

If you suspect that your dog is marking his territory due to stress, you should identify the stressors and find a way to deal with them.

For instance, if you’ve noticed that your dog only marks when you’re away, they may be suffering from separation anxiety.

In such a case, you should teach your dog that it’s okay to spend time away from you. And this includes when you’re at home. Keeping departures and arrivals low-key will also reduce tension for the already stressed dog.

However, if this doesn’t work, it’s advisable to seek professional help from a trainer or animal behaviorist.

Make friends

If you’re asking, “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” and you have several neighbors with dogs, it may be a good idea to investigate the outdoors.

The other dogs in your area may be coming close to your home, making your furry friend feel insecure. As a result, your dog may feel the need to mark their territory.

If this is the case, it may help to befriend your neighbors and get your pets acquainted. This way, your dog will no longer feel threatened when the other canines invade their “territory.”

Break the bad habit, even outdoors

Sometimes the practice of territory marking is so engrained in your dog that even when you remove environmental stressors and choose to neuter, they keep doing it.

In such scenarios, you have to be tough and establish strict limitations, even for marking outdoors.

When you’re walking your dog, allow them to empty their bladder when they need to but interrupt them as soon as you notice they want to mark the area. Interruption can be something as simple as walking away as if you haven’t seen the dog wants to mark the spot.

So another answer to “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” is to be a boss. Even you don’t want to.

Most dogs like marking the same spot over and over again. And they can tell it’s the same spot they marked previously by smelling the pee there.

Therefore, to discourage them from continuing this habit, you need to make sure every area they mark is spotless and free of pee-odor. The best way to do this is to use an enzymatic cleaner. Such cleaners break down the stains as opposed to masking them with a fragrance.

Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners because they smell like pee and will only encourage the dog to keep marking. And if you’ve just moved to a new home that previously had pets, it may help to have it professionally cleaned.

Alternatively, you can use a black light to spot potential problem areas and clean them thoroughly. It may seem tedious, but you’ll be glad you did it.

Outsmart your dog

If you’ve tried everything and your dog is still marking their territory all over your house, it may be time to try some drastic measures. One perfect solution for such a case is to use a belly band.

A belly band is a tube-top kind of fabric that goes around your dog’s waistline covering their penis. With the belly band on, it will be impossible for your dog’s pee to get on your furniture, floors, or any other area because the fabric absorbs all the pee.

While this isn’t a long-term solution, it will surely save you the headache of occasionally cleaning to get rid of your dog’s “accidents.” Just make sure you combine it with the other tips on this list for even better results.

Yes, that’s right, one of the more bizarre answers to “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?” is essentially a doggie diaper.

Resolve conflict

The addition of a new cat or dog to your family may also lead to territorial marking, and in most cases, there will be a significant conflict between the pets.

For this reason, you need to find a way to maintain peace in your home. Answering “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house” gets a lot more complicated when other pets are involved. But there are several things you can do. These include:

Scent sharing

Separation is key

Give each pet their territory

Socialize at a young age

Don’t make things worse

It’s frustrating to have to clean up after your dog every time. However, as tempting as it may be to reprimand him after the fact, it’s not the best approach. Some people insist the best answer to “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house” is to “rub his nose in it.” It really isn’t.

Punishing your dog after they’ve already marked the area won’t solve the problem because they won’t connect your displeasure to their act. Not to mention, it will only make your fur baby scared of you, and they’ll hide when they need to mark their territory.

The best way to fix the problem is to intervene when the dog is marking. You can do so by startling him or clapping your hands and opening the door to get the dog outside. This way, they’ll connect your reaction to their actions.

The most important tip of all

It’s also essential to rule out any medical condition, especially if you’ve tried behavioral modification without success.

Some medical conditions may resemble marking, and no amount of behavioral modification will get your dog to stop. For instance, if your dog has a urinary tract infection (UTI), they’ll have a constant need to go, and they’ll only pee in small amounts throughout the day.

Therefore, make sure you see your vet and ensure everything is okay.

Wrapping Up

If you’ve been asking yourself, “how do I stop my dog from marking his territory in the house?”, now you have the answer. Troubleshoot the reasons your dog may be into this new habit and find the right solution for the problem. And if it’s a sudden behavior change you can’t explain, it’s always best to rule out any medical conditions.
